EAC Engineering MRA Campaign Hub

The EAC Engineering MRA Campaign Hub is a regional information platform developed to help engineers, engineering firms, employers, regulators, professional bodies, students and the public understand and use the Engineering Mutual Recognition Agreement within the East African Community.

The platform is developed for the EAC Secretariat, with support from the Federal Republic of Germany, and technical support from ESAMI–trapca, in collaboration with GIZ under the Digitalisation for East African Trade and Integration (DIGEAT) Project.

EAC Engineering MRA Campaign Hub

Purpose of the Hub

The campaign responds to a practical implementation gap:

  • The Engineering MRA exists, but many users still need clear and practical information.
  • Engineers need guidance on eligibility, documentation, procedures and registration requirements.
  • Regulators and Competent Authorities need coordinated information-sharing tools.
  • Employers and firms need to understand what recognition allows — and what it does not allow.
  • Students and young engineers need accessible information on professional pathways.

EAC MRA Digital Registration Platform

A key objective of the Hub is to increase awareness, understanding and practical use of the EAC MRA Digital Registration Platform.

The platform supports the recognition process by enabling engineers to:

  • Register online.
  • Submit recognition applications.
  • Track application status.
  • Access approved recognition documentation.
  • Support Competent Authorities to review, process and provide feedback on applications.

  • Graduate engineers.
  • Engineering students.
  • Underrepresented professional groups.
  • Small and emerging engineering firms.

Important Notice

  • Work permits.
  • Tax compliance.
  • Business registration.
  • Procurement rules.
  • Professional conduct and liability.
  • Country-specific engineering practice requirements.

FAQs

Everything you need to know, all in one place

Does the MRA give me automatic permission to practise?

No. It facilitates recognition but does not replace host-country approval, registration or licensing.

Is the MRA the same as a work permit?

No. The MRA is about professional recognition. Work permits and immigration approvals are separate.

Do I still need to apply to the host-country regulator?

Yes. You must apply to the regulator in the country where you want to practise.

Which countries have clearer Engineering MRA implementation information?

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda signed the Engineering MRA in 2012, Rwanda signed in 2016, and South Sudan acceded in 2024. Country-specific pages should still verify the latest registration requirements with each national competent authority. (EAC Strategy for Trade in Services)

What documents should I prepare?

Prepare academic certificates, professional registration proof, practising licence where applicable, certificate of good standing, CV, experience records, identification documents, proof of payment and any host-country-specific forms.

Can graduate engineers use the MRA?

Can engineering firms use the MRA?

The MRA mainly supports recognition of individual engineers. Firms may still need separate registration in the host country.

Who gives the final decision?

The host-country competent authority gives the final decision.
